Amongst some of the more active, and fastest families of fish in the hobby, Danios are often the first tropical fish recommended to the beginner aquarist and rightfully so. Some specimens are known to be one of the hardiest of aquarium fish found in the trade, able to withstand the few amateur mistakes one may encounter when first introduced to the hobby. As beautiful as they are hardy, Danios come in an array of shapes and sizes, and although the most common ones seen are your smaller community types, such as Zebras, Leopards, and Pearl Danios, there are more, although less common, species available to suffice the more advanced hobbyist.
Like barbs, Some Danios are quite peaceful, while others have attitude to spare. These more boisterous species do much better in a community with the latter and other faster moving species. Some are even commonly kept with aggressive, more territorial species such as African cichlids as the Danios are often too fast for them to catch.
Generally most Danios have a silvery blue hue to them, complemented with many markings, stripes, or mosaics of other hues such as olives, golds, yellows, and reds depending on the species. Like their close relatives, the Rasboras; newer species such as Choprae danios, and Danio Kyathit or the Orange finned danio have been recently introduced to the hobby, offering a much more array of colours than the more common danios.
